UBI Lab Kirklees - Next steps exploring how a UBI might affect Kirklees

UBI Lab Kirklees would like to invite you to a Zoom call to discuss our local next steps in exploring how a Basic Income might affect Kirklees.

This might include whether we ask local policymakers to support a local pilot, a Recovery UBI, or the adoption of Basic Income to support recovery in a post-Covid society. We can also talk about how we might want to move forward with the work we had already planned, which is still important.

This is an open meeting, but will have a local Kirklees focus.

Child friendly (don't worry about what chaos may be reigning in the background!).

Meeting ID: 898 1011 4394

Background:

UBI Lab Kirklees exists to explore the implications of a Universal Basic Income for our local area. It was formed after International Basic Income Week in 2019.

We had our first meeting at the end of last year, and had planned to meet again in Feb/March. Obviously that was not possible, and it is unlikely that we will be able to meet in person for some time. We had also decided to undertake a programme of community engagement with a variety of local groups, which will now be more complicated.

However, while the pandemic has made these plans more difficult, in many ways it has provided opportunities for the Basic Income movement. Our government has taken a series of extremely radical interventions in the economy, at an unprecedented speed and scale. Countries around the world - including Scotland and Wales - have begun seriously developing policies linked to Basic Income, and many who were previously sceptical have ‘come out’ in favour of UBI either as an emergency stimulus or a long-term measure in the current climate.

It would be great to hear as many contributions as possible about how Kirklees fits into this emerging picture.
