A UBI is a regular and equal payment to everyone from the state. Payment levels for a UBI vary from £60-£150 per week. It is like the state pension and child benefit, except it is paid to all adults. It has the potential to guarantee the right to basic financial security to all, dramatically reduce poverty and give us more time and money to spend on the things that matter to us.
What would you do with a UBI payment? How would it change your life?
UBI trials around the world - from Canada, to Finland and India - have shown it's potential to improve the health of those communities, by reducing the stresses associated with financial insecurity. It also showed that a UBI could support people who want to set up a business and seek further education. And none of the trials have shown that people work less!
The current welfare system is not working as it should and Universal Credit is failing. Too many people are living in poverty and insecurity, too many are forced to use food banks and too many are homeless. Isn't it time we tried something new?
A UBI could be part of the answer and Leeds could be the first place to try it.
